What are Bentonite Clays?

Bentonite clays usually forms from weathering of volcanic ash, most often in the presence of water. Also referred to as Montmorillonite, it is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. For cosmetic, horticultural and health purposes, two main classes of bentonite exist: sodium and calcium bentonite. Sodium bentonite expands when wet, absorbing several times its dry mass in water. As with Calcium bentonite, Sodium bentonite is widely used in the health and beauty industry in cosmetics and as a detoxification agent. Bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins. When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical, or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release it’s minerals for the body to use. For this reason it is often used as an animal feed additive to detoxify livestock prior to them entering the human food chain. It is the main active ingredient of fuller's earth which has been used for hundreds of years as a general cleaning agent.  A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining.

Bentonite Clay Applications

There are a large number of uses for Bentonite clays so please don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. We supply Bentonite clays in Cosmetic Grade and Animal Feed Grade. Bentonite clays are an all natural product that have an incredible number of uses:

On The Farm:

Soil Conditioning - Bentonite clays from ClearOFF Minerals have a varied range of applications and uses including soil conditioning to allieviate erosion, improve water retension and supply essential minerals. Sodium bentonite is one of the “most effective low cost methods” of treating porous soils, infact it has all factors necessary for healthy plants, while still being cost effective for the grower.

Pond & Lake Lining - Sodium bentonite swells up to 15 times it own size causing it to bind with the soil underneath to create a watertight seal.

Building Restoration - Poultices for masonry restoration and other specialist applications.

Anti-caking & Flow Agent - E558 - ClearOFF Minerals supply Sepifeed BA-200 Animal Feed Grade Calcium Bentonite as a completely natural, chemical free anti-caking agent. It has very useful benefits in products and feeds that experience difficulties in pouring and flowing. Particularly stock-feeds containing molasses tend to form clumps and become sticky. Not only will the clumps become hard to pour, they start to encourage mould and potential wastage can occur. Sepifeed BA-200 when mixed with the feed will coat the particles preventing them from binding together. This enables the feed to flow better making the feed less likely to mould due to the moisture absorbency characteristics of Bentonites.

For Humans:

Beauty & Spa - Cosmetic Grade Bentonites are widely used in make-up and skin care products such as soaps, clay poultices, face packs, body wraps, tattoo removal, skin whitening and by the spa industry, etc.

Face Mask - For smooth and healthy skin, make a paste of bentonite and water and apply as a mask (a similar mask is used in many spas). Leave on for 20 minutes and wash off. Treat once or twice a week.

Weight Loss, Toning, Detox & Remineralizing Body Wraps - Take adequate amount of bentonite clay and mash it properly. Apply on problem part of your body and rub gently for 2-3 minutes. Then wrap it with any of wrapping material like foiling sheet or plastic sheet. Tight your skin using bandages stripes. Let this wrap sit for several hours. Remove everything and rinse well.

Detox Bath - Add about 1/4 cup of Bentonite Clay to a bath for a relaxing detox bath that also softens skin.

Oral Rinse - Bentonite can also be mixed with water as an alkalizing and toxin removing mouth rinse, a beneficial treatment for mouth ulcers, gum disease, halitosis, viral and bacterial infections etc. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of clay in 1/4 cup water in a small jar with a plastic lid and shake well. Rinse with the water for 1-2 minutes and repeat until there is no more remaining.

Remineralizing Tooth Powder - Because of it’s excellent ability to bind to heavy metals and toxins as well as to provide minerals, it makes an excellent remineralizing tooth powder. It can even be used alone or with your regular toothpaste for brushing, it is tasteless and relatively textureless.

Skin Problems & Wounds - Externally, apply a paste of bentonite clay and water on any skin irritation like blemishes, insect bites, cuts, sores, or burns. I leave it on until it dries and wash off. This is said to be especially calming to skin itching from eczema, dermatitis, rosacea, psoriasis, chicken pox, etc. and helpful for curing acne and other disorders. For more severe issues, create a poultice by putting a thick layer of clay on the skin and applying a wet gauze or cloth over it. Wrap the area and leave the poultice on, changing every 2 hours.

Tattoo Removal - Calcium bentonite clay has natural negative charged ionic molecules whereas most substances, including tattoo ink, have positive charged ionic molecules. The clay literally attracts positive charged ink and holds it (adsorption) as well as drawing the ink molecules inside the clay molecules (absorption). This amazing double bout process works with astonishing efficancy.

Skin Bleaching - Gently bleaches the skin and draws out pigment. Can lighten skin colour, reduce liver spots and blemishes

For Mastitis - Create a poultice or mask of Bentonite Clay and water and apply externally to the area. Repeat as needed every hour until the infection is gone.

Baby Powder - Plain Bentonite Clay makes a very soothing baby powder for use when there is infection or redness. It can also be made into a clay “mask” to help speed recovery in this area.

Complimentary Treatments - Bentonite and other healing clays are used internally to help reduce radiation exposure, in alternative cancer treatments, and in MRSA infections. It is also said to greatly help in Parasite removal.

Disclaimer

Although many of our customers purchase this mineral for internal consumption we are not legally permitted to recommend doing so. This is due to the fact that we are mineral suppliers and not licensed nutritionists, health food advisers or doctors. Some minerals can have an effect on certain medication etc, thus making recommending consumption a dangerous practice.

Our Bentonites are either a cosmetic grade clay as used in make-up, skin treatments, soaps etc. Or an animal feed grade clay as used in horticulture and livestock farming. Therefor neither contain any harmful levels of toxins such as Mercury, Lead and Arsenic. I provide a full breakdown of the chemical analysis on the mineral information page thus allowing the customer to make their own informed decision.

Please note that we have yet to find a 'Codex' Food Grade Bentonite available to purchase in this country. You will find companies in other countries claiming 'Food Grade' but their countries standards are much lower than those in the UK. In the UK it has to be tested in a government CODEX lab, in small batches, by law (an expensive process for what is often the same clay sold in other countries as Food Grade). Yet, in the US for example, the mineral can be tested in any laboratory and the limits allowed are considerably higher than those in the UK.

Ingesting Bentonites

A person who observes nature can witness the fact that animals instinctively use earth to cure themselves. Indeed, we owe much of our discovery in this field to animals. Bentonite Clay is a unique its ability to produce an “electrical charge” when hydrated. Upon contact with fluid, its electrical components change, giving it the ability to absorb toxins. Bentonite is known for its ability to absorb and remove toxins, heavy metals, impurities, and chemicals. A Czech study shown that bentonite clay added to pig slurry removed 98.9% of psychrophilic microorganisms and 100% of mesophilic microorganisms. And in a study from Arizona State University, bentonite clay was found to be highly effective at killing MRSA as well as Salmonella, E.Coli and others. What is promising as research continues in this area is that depending on the method in which the clay kills the infection, it may not be possible for the MRSA or other bacteria to develop a resistance to it as it does with antibiotics. Bentonites have a high concentration of minerals including silica, calcium, magnesium, sodium, iron, and potassium, all of which are essential to health and wellbeing.
